Some of you may recognize this! Because it's an excerpt from a longer fic I wrote a couple of years ago, ahaha. But I was poking through older writing of mine, and I re-discovered the fic, which I am not so fond of now, but I really, really love this scene.

Happy birthday, carawj! Figuring out how to make this story work ate my brain this summer, so I hope you like it. Late, but I get points for posting it on the 11th (of some month!) and for it being exactly 2006 words long, right? Now you can never forget which birthday it was for. ;)

Holy shit.

At four o'clock this afternoon, I had three paragraphs (none of which really were used by the end), but I ended up having fifteen pages and being 47 words short of 5,000. Damn.

Anyway. The fic was due at midnight. I raced to finish and was still ten minutes late, so. I don't really like the last several pages. They're very rushed (because I was very rushed, ha). After finals I'm going to go back and completely re-write the ending after the scene where Simon goes to visit River in her room. Mostly I'm really proud of the story though because I never thought I'd get it written. Kaylee/River/Simon is pretty much my OT3 to end all OT3s. I hope I did them some justice.

This is the longest anything I've ever written, and it's the first original story (as opposed to fanfic or poetry) I've written in a couple of years. I wrote it with Kristin in mind for Christmas/our anniversary, but I'm really happy with the way it turned out, so I am sharing it here too.
