It only took the whole summer, but I finished my Maud/Sue fanmix yesterday (alternate link for non-[info]fanmix members). I've had the track listing and the front cover done for a while. I was just procrastinating on the back cover because trying to find a good color for the text was a pain in the ass. I'm not quite happy with the way the back turned out, but it's readable, so it will do.

I'm delighted with everything else though. I've been reading the book all morning, and now I'm dying to watch the miniseries again. I left the dvd with my mother when I came to Bloomington because she asked if she could borrow it, after watching a couple of fanvids I left on her computer. So I've been watching the mostly crappy Youtube videos. There are a lot of the sex scenes, which disappoints me. (I'm not surprised, just picky about my love.) Fingersmith has some of the best kissing I've ever seen on film, and the love scenes are amazing - no nudity, not even a little, but so much emotion conveyed - but there is so much more to the movie. Elaine Cassidy and Sally Hawkins are amazing actresses, nearly perfect in their roles.

(If the sex scenes are to be watched on their own, I recommend this one (if it says you need to log in, try "bgmenot001" for the username and "123456" for the password). The other scene (which is actually shown twice) is very good, but it's this one that really draws me in. Maud's desperation, the dialogue. The dialogue is what kills me. We weren't dreaming, were we?) [ETA: asdfghjkl;lkjhgf Okay, they both draw me in.]

Also I think this video was really well done. The vidder does a nice job of setting up the tension between the girls, and the song choice is really, really lovely. (Also it just hit me that Sia is one of the vocalists for Zero 7. I didn't realize the connection before, even though I remembered there was a Sia. I didn't realize they were the same person.)

I think the thing that I find so infinitely compelling about Fingersmith is the humanity of the characters. They are deeply flawed, not always likable, but so very human. It's easy to understand being trapped by your own actions, finding yourself in an unexpected situation, being drawn to the wrong person at the wrong time, wanting to change the (inevitable) outcome. Making that connection despite all of the unknowns.

I want to know what happens afterward. The book ended on a perfect note. I wouldn't have had it end any other way, but I do want to know. I have this whole idea in my head, what could happen, but I wonder what Sarah Waters would do. (WWSWD! The only bracelet I want more is one that says WWVMD.)
